I am a huge fan of Pete the Cat, I own all his books, I know all his songs, and I even have a stuffed Pete the Cat plush. Last year I was located in a building that allowed us to pain directly onto our windows, for every special occasion I painted a different Pete on the window to keep my kiddos motivated in whatever topic we were learning about, and to inspire conversations. Young children really seem to enjoy Pete's positive attitude, and love the repetitive and singsong text that accompanies him in most of his books.
For my lesson, you will all be preschool students and you will have previously read the original Pete the Cat book, Pete The Cat: I Love My White Shoes. The story is about a cat named Pete that loves his white shoes, but steps into piles of different colored items such as strawberries, blueberries, and mud that change the color of his shoes. Pete doesn't get upset about his shoes becoming dirty and "keeps walking along and singing his song." I love using this book to teach a variety of different preschool CCSS as well as basic preschool skills. Students learn to attend to text, are exposed to color words, repetitive text, and cause and effect. It also teaches the basic skills of coping with situations not going as planned and having a positive outlook and response to such disappointments.
I hope you enjoy the lesson and find ways to incorporate Pete into your own elementary classrooms!
